Learning Strategy

What Works logo

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has a mission to lead the effort to improve outcomes for children and young people in Ireland. At the core of this is protecting children and young people, and helping them achieve their full potential. Prevention and early intervention is key to promoting the best possible outcomes.

Prevention and early intervention means intervening at a young age, or early in the onset of difficulties, or at points of known increased vulnerability such as school transitions, adolescence and parenthood. When properly applied, it can significantly improve  outcomes  for children, young people and their families.

Under What Works, the Department has published a learning strategy. This strategy sets out to foster persistent curiosity among those working to improve the lives of children and young people. The Learning Strategy is our plan to manage learning and development under What Works. The Learning Strategy will improve the knowledge and skills of professionals working with children, young people and their families to use prevention and early intervention.
